October 1-15, 2005 Edition AWARDS Norman Mailer

To Receive NBA

Achievement Award NEW YORK, NY/9/21/05—The National Book Foundation will honor well-known and often controversial author, Norman Mailer, with a lifetime achievement award. The award will be presented on November 16 at the National Book Awards annual ceremony. This year’s finalists for the NBA prize will be announced October 12.

Mr. Mailer will receive the 2005 Medial for Distinguished Contribution to American Letters. Mailer won Pulitzer prizes in 1969 and 1980, and a Naitonal Book Award in 1969.

Mailer has long been considered a major icon of postwar American literature. A native of New Jersey, the 82-year-old Mailer has written dozens of books, plays, poems, screenplays and essays. He also co-founded The Village Voice, an alternative newspaper based in New York. He is perhaps best known for his novel THE NAKED AND THE DEAD, a fictionalized story of his own Army experiences during World War Two.
