NEW YORK, NY/2/11/08–HarperCollins will now give full online access to some of its titles, according to The New York Times. The publisher has been allowing readers to sneak preview 20% of some books two weeks ahead of their publication, but now will offer the full text of selected titles under its Full Access program. While Internet users can view the books, they will not be allowed to download them. Those who want to purchase a book will be directed to a variety of online retailers.

HarperCollins president and CEO Jane Friedman said the company’s digital warehouse will enable them to securely, quickly, and easily change what content is offered, whether to provide previews of upcoming books or to promote backlist titles. Harper also will expand its role as publisher to develop tools that easily allow authors to promote their work to online communities.

Paulo Coelho’s The Witch of Portobello will be among titles offered in full, kicking off a year-long promotion of his work. Each month another full book by Coelho will be available online.
