Oct 8 – Oct 14, 2012 Edition Grimmelmann Joins PW as Legal Editor

NEW YORK—October 9, 2012— Publishers Weekly has appointed James Grimmelmann, professor of law at New York Law School, as contributing editor for legal affairs.

One of the foremost experts on the controversial Google settlement and its implications, Grimmelmann writes about intellectual property, search engines, online privacy and other topics in computer and Internet law. The Web site The Public Index was created by Grimmelmann and his students to inform the public about the Google settlement.

He is slated to post regularly on the Publishers Weekly blog PWxyz, contribute occasional features and columns and provide ongoing expert guidance that will help inform PW’s strong coverage of the publishing world’s legal affairs.

“We’re living through the biggest shift in publishing since the invention of printing, and the biggest shift in copyright since the invention of copyright,” Grimmelmann says. “The law is going to play a huge role in how we manage the transition, and I'm looking forward to exploring the terrain where law, technology, culture and business meet.”

Andrew Richard Albanese, senior writer and features editor at Publishers Weekly, says, “As publishing and the law increasingly collide in this age of e-books and digital delivery, I have come to rely on James Grimmelmann as a source and as a resource. We look forward to his column as a way to unravel and decode the sticky issues that affect the publishing world.”

Grimmelmann is the author of the textbook Internet Law: Cases and Problems (Semaphore Press, 2011), “Saving Facebook” (Iowa Law Review, 2009), “Dr. Generative or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the iPhone” (Maryland Law Review, 2010) and numerous other articles published in leading law reviews. He holds a J.D. from Yale Law School and an A.B. in computer science from Harvard College. He has also worked as a programmer for Microsoft. Since 2000 he has been blogging at the Laboratorium.
