Book Sales Dip 4%

5/14/07-­The U.S. Census Bureau reports that bookstore sales for March dropped 4.1% to $998 million compared to $1.041 billion in the same period last year. The figures are for new book sales and do not include electronic sales, mail-order, or used book sales. Year to date sales were also down to $4.2 billion, down 4% from $4.4 billion.

Overall retail sales grew 3.4% to $342,022 billion for March, with a year to date increase of 4%. However, preliminary sales figures for total retail for April were expected to be the worst ever recorded.
