August 15-31, 2004 Edition PEOPLE Mandel to Join FSG as Deputy Publisher

NEW YORK, NY/08/10/04—Andrew Mandel has been named executive vice president and deputy publisher of Farrar Straus & Giroux, effective September 20. He joins the company after serving as general manager of Workman Publishing.

Madel will oversee finance, operations, production, sales and marketing, with the goal of boosting FSG’s performance.

Lonely Planet Publisher Dies at Age 40

OAKLAND, CA/08/02/04—Maria Donohoe, who served as U.S. publishing manager of Lonely Planet, died unexpectedly of a heart attack August 2 at age 40. She had been on maternity leave and was due back on the job within a few weeks. She is survived by her husband, Justin Marler, whom she met at Lonely Planet, and their five-month-old daughter, Laura Elizabeth.

Lonely Planet publishes more than 650 guidebooks in 14 different languages, and provides a range of other services for world travelers.

Shannon to Fill North’s Post at HarperCanada

08/04/04—Jeff Shannon, who has worked for Sony Music Canada, and several other companies unrelated to publishing, will succeed Chris Noreth, former COO, at HarperCanada. However, his title will be vice president of administration and operations. He will report to CEO David Kent.

Little, Brown Young Readers Unit Shuffles Sales Staff

NEW YORK, NY/04/08/04—Celeste Risko has been named national account manager for Little Brown for Young Readers, where she’ll sell to major accounts including Borders, where she was a former buyer. Risko will report to Shawn Foster, sales director for Little Brown for Young Readers. Risko succeeds Jennifer O’Donohue, who joined Penguin.

Chris Murphy, recently hired away from Scholastic, is vice president of sales for the Little Brown imprints, including Bulfinch, Warner Faith and Little Brown for Young Readers.

Shawn Foster, and Harry Helm, sales director for Bulfinch and Warner Faith, now both report to Chris Murphy.
