NEW YORK, NY/1/16/06—HarperCollins US has negotiated an agreement with Waterfront Media to launch content for the publisher’s authors and titles online. The system will allow consumers to subscribe and access HarperCollins content on the Internet.

HarperCollins is joining several other major publishers in offering their own online content as a move against the search giant, Google’s massive effort to copy (some say pirate) and control content without permission from publishers.

Consumers will be able to sign up as members of HarperCollins’s special site and access exclusive online content, according to HarperCollins Group President Brian Murray. The executive said “This agreement is another example of our Publishing-Plus and Author-Plus initiatives to bring value to our authors through creative partnerships.”

Waterfront Media is a leading marketer of book brands on the web. Working with them allows us to extend our author and book brands online, an increasingly important component of the publishing process,” Murray said.

HarperCollins UK is not currently involved in the initiative but said that it was very interested in extending its online presence in this manner.
