Mar 21 – Mar 27, 2011 Edition Governor Daniels (R-IN)to Publish Book with Sentinel
NEW YORK, NY/AUTHORLINK NEWS/March 21, 2011–The Sentinel imprint of Penguin Group (USA) has acquired a major book by Mitch Daniels, the incumbent two-term Republican Governor of Indiana. He will address Americas urgent need for limited but more effective government, fiscal discipline at all levels, increased liberty for individuals, and a restoration of our national greatness. World rights were acquired by Sentinel President and Publisher Adrian Zackheim from Robert B. Barnett of Williams & Connolly.
The tentative title is Keeping the Republic: Limited Government, Unlimited Citizens. Publication is planned for late September.
Mr. Zackheim commented, What distinguishes Governor Daniels is not merely the power of his ideas, but his hard-won experience at implementing those ideas in the real world. He is a thoughtful and eloquent writer whose message deserves to be heard across the political spectrum.
Governor Daniels said, Im offering these thoughts only because I am desperately alarmed about the condition and direction of the American republic. What just recently seemed a highly secure, ever more prosperous, internationally dominant nation is now endangered as never before, save perhaps the days of Soviet nuclear confrontation. But I devoutly believe there is a route to renewal, a way to reconstruct both our economy and an ethic of citizenship that will preserve both prosperity and liberty.
Last February, New York Times columnist Ross Douthat called Governor Daniels Americas best governor. He added, During the fat years of the mid-2000s, while most governors went on spending sprees, he was trimming Indianas payroll, slowing the state governments growth, and turning a $800 million deficit into a consistent surplus. Now that times are hard, his fiscal rigor is paying off.
More recent praise for Governor Daniels:
His recent address at CPAC, delivered with characteristic Coolidge-like coolness, was the most important Republican speech of recent years — the only one worth reading aloud to little conservatives around the hearth fire. Michael Gerson, The Washington Post
Daniels is keeping his paramount focus on debt and responsibility. He couldnt match Obama in grace and elegance, but he could on substance. They could have a great and clarifying debate: What exactly are the paramount problems facing the country? What is governments role in solving them? I hope Daniels gives us a chance to be part of that. David Brooks, The New York Times
Daniels has practiced the lean government he preaches. Under him, Indiana has its fewest state employees since 1978, the nations lowest state-government employment per capita, the lowest effective property taxes and the third-lowest per capita spending. So he has the credentials to counsel conservatives about the need to compromise in the interest of broadening the constituency for difficult reforms. George F. Will, The Washington Post
To some degree, everyone has a stake in his success. Because if Gov. Daniels is even half-right about what ails us, his defeat will be everyones defeat. John Ellis, The Business Insider
