Gentel Heads Newly Merged
Houghton Mifflin Harcourt
NEW YORK, NY/1/8/08–Gary Gentel, interim president of Houghton Mifflin Trade & Reference Group, has been named president of the newly-merged Houghton Mifflin Harcourt Trade & Reference Publishers. He replaces HMH president Dan Farley, who is leaving the company at the end of this month.
Gentel has played a significant role in planning the integration of Harcourt Trade with Houghton Mifflin Trade and Reference. He served as the Trade and Reference division's Corporate Vice President, Director of Sales for the past four years. Prior to joining HM, he was vice president of trade sales for Scholastic and previously served as president of Candlewick Press.
Key management slots at the newly merged HMH will be filled by Bridget Marmion as senior vice president of marketing; Laurie Brown, as senior vice president of sales; and Mia Camacho, as senior vice president of finance and operations. Marmion had served in a similar role at HM, Brown at Harcourt, and Camacho also at HM.
Houghton Mifflin completed its $4 billion purchase of Harcourt's U.S. education group in December 2007. The acquisition included Harcourt Trade, Harcourt's American el-hi operations, and Greenwood-Heinemann reference division. The combined company has been renamed Houghton Mifflin Harcourt Publishing Company. Tony Lucki serves as chairman and CEO. The newly merged company will now have total revenues of $2.5 billion.
