Elmore Leonard’s body of work is formidable, but this compilation is an excellent sample from the Master of popular entertainment.

“. . .a vivid picture of the times with his trademark virtuosity.”

Leonard’s scriptwriting experience comes into play for Get Shorty, an acerbic tale of Hollywood. Loan-shark Chili Palmer trails an absconding client to L.A. knowing he has a mobster on his own trail with a personal score to settle. Chili falls in with fading movie producer Harry Zimm, a man with a desperate need for money and no sense of morality as to its source, and the lovely Karen Flores, an actress with far more going for her than it appears. Between them they outwit hoodlums and movie people alike as Chili discovers he has a real talent for the film business.

Rum Punch features Jackie Burke, a middle-aged air stewardess with serious troubles working for the world’s lousiest airline. When she gets involved with drug pushers and federal agents Jackie never loses her cool, handling all life throws at her with steely resolve.

Out of Sight tells the story of the unlikely romance between career gentleman bank robber Jack Foley and Deputy U.S. Marshal Karen Sisco. Caught up in a prison break, Sisco and Foley encounter each other and sparks fly. The story moves first to Miami, then to Detroitwhere Sisco and Foley fight against their increasing attraction as they try to outwit each other in the middle of a kidnapping plot.

Tishomingo Blues was inspired by the world of Civil War re-enactors. Dennis Lenahan is a star exhibition high-diver pushing forty, a risk-taker who hops in and out of bed with a different women every night. Not the brightest bulb in the box, Dennis witnesses something he shouldn’t and finds himself in mortal danger from the Dixie Mafia.

Derived from Leonard’s work of the 1990’s and early 2000’s, Elmore Leonard: Four Later Novels paints a vivid picture of the times with his trademark virtuosity.
