Up for September
New York, NY/11/28/2007–Book sales tracked by the Association of American Publishers (AAP) for the month of September saw an increase of 5.7 percent for the month; yearly sales were up as well with an increase of 9.9 percent.
The Adult Hardcover category was up by 23.6 percent in September with sales of $246.5 million; year-to-date sales were up by 14.8 percent. Adult Paperback sales were down by 10.7 percent for the month ($148.1 million); sales were down slightly by 1.8 percent for the year. The Adult Mass Market category declined by 7.5 percent for September with sales totaling $71.6 million; sales also declined by 6.3 percent year-to-date. The Children’s/YA Hardcover category saw a decrease of 12.8 percent for the month with sales of $87.1 million; sales year-to-date were also up by 63.0 percent. The Children’s/YA Paperback category increased by 8.7 percent in September with sales totaling $58.1 million; sales were also up by 4.4 percent for the year.
Audio Book sales posted an increase of 36.5 percent for September compared to last year’s figures with sales totaling $22.5 million; sales for the whole year were up by 40.1 percent. E-books sales rose by 27.7 percent for the month ($2.9 million); the category also posted an increase of 23.6 percent for the year. Religious Books posted an increase of 1.6 percent for the month with sales of $83.1 million; sales were up by 8.3 percent for the year.
Sales of University Press Hardcover books were up by 7.5 percent in Septemb7er with sales of $6.6 million; sales were also up by 7.0 percent for the year. University Press Paperback sales posted a decline of 6.0 percent for the month with sales totaling $6.1 million; sales were up 2.5 percent for the year. Sales in the Professional and Scholarly category declined by 6.3 percent in September ($55.2 million); sales were up 4.8 percent for the year.
Higher Education publishing sales rose by 17.0 percent for the month ($270.7 million); sales were also up by 8.9 percent for the year. Finally, the net El-Hi (elementary/high school) basal and supplemental K-12 category posted an increase of 0.6 percent in September with sales of $381.2 million; this category also posted an increase of 3.0 percent for the year.
The Association of American Publishers is the national trade association of the U.S. book publishing industry. AAP’s more than 300 members include most of the major commercial publishers in the United States, as well as smaller and non-profit publishers, university presses and scholarly societies-small and large.
