Metro Detroit-based businessman, author and songwriter Andy Gutman has received multiple 2018 Purple Dragonfly Book Awards, a prestigious national book contest recognizing authors for excellence in writing and publishing. Purple Dragonfly Book Awards are a program of Story Monsters LLC, home to the award-winning Story Monsters Ink magazine, the literary resource for teachers, librarians and parents.

Gutman’s well-received 2017 book, Charlie the Caterpillar, is a story conceptualized by his daughter Riley and wife Lesley about a caterpillar who looks in the mirror and only sees what’s missing. With the help of some caring and colorful friends, Charlie begins to learn it’s what inside that counts. The book received 2nd Place for in the Arts/Music category and an honorable mention in the Picture Book 5 & Younger, Best Cover Design and Best Illustrations categories.

Pop Lullaby, Gutman’s second children’s book released earlier this year, is a 34-page bedtime story that follows a tired father and his wide-awake baby. The book received 2nd Place in the Picture Books 5 & Younger category. It also received an honorable mention in the Arts/Music, Best Cover Design and Best Illustrations categories.

“I am thrilled to be recognized for the work I put into my two children’s books,” said Gutman. “They were a labor of love of mine, and years in the making. I began writing creatively when I was young, and it is now what I do at night when everyone is asleep.”

In 2009, the Purple Dragonfly Book Awards were conceived with children in mind. Accomplished authors in the field of children’s literature are recognized and honored. Up-and-coming, newly published authors and younger published writers are highlighted.
Divided into 56 distinct subject categories ranging from books on the environment and cooking to sports and family issues, and even marketing collateral that complements a book, the Purple Dragonfly Book Awards are geared toward stories that appeal to children of all ages. Purple Dragonfly Book Awards’ judges are industry experts with specific knowledge about the categories over which they preside. They look for books that are original, innovative and creative in both content and design.

In his day-job, Gutman is President of Southfield, Mich.-based Farbman Group and its related companies. At night, he chases his creative dreams while the rest of the world sleeps. He is a writer, songwriter and dreamer who tries to see the beauty in the world.
