Jan 10 – Jan 16, 2011 Edition Library Association Honors Six Random House Authors

(New York, NY) January 10, 2011—The American Library Association (ALA) announced the 2011 Youth Media Awards today in San Diego, CA at their annual Midwinter Meeting. Six Random House Children’s Books authors received awards and honors. For the second consecutive year, a Random House Children’s Books title has won the highest honor in children’s literature: the John Newbery Medal.

MOON OVER MANIFEST by Clare Vanderpool, published by Delacorte Press Books for Young Readers, receives the John Newbery Medal. Intricately woven yet rich in its simplicity, MOON OVER MANIFEST, Vanderpool’s first novel, is the tale of a young girl who, while searching for clues about her father’s boyhood, uncovers the long-held secrets of a Kansas town blanketed in silence. Alternating between the Great Depression and World War I, the novel is based upon stories Clare Vanderpool heard as a child, in addition to research from town newspapers, yearbooks, and graveyards. MOON OVER MANIFEST received an impressive three starred reviews and was named a 2010 Association of Booksellers for Children (ABC) New Voices Pick. The Newbery Medal is awarded to the author of the most distinguished contribution to American literature for children. The novel was edited by Michelle Poploff, Vice President, Executive Editor, Delacorte Press Books for Young Readers.

TURTLE IN PARADISE by Jennifer L. Holm, published by Random House Books for Young Readers, is named a John Newbery Honor Book. This is Holm’s third Newbery Honor Book. Inspired by her own family’s history, TURTLE IN PARADISE provides a unique look into the era of the Great Depression, rich in historical detail, humor, and the unique flavors of Key West. The novel chronicles the move of Turtle, a spunky, smart, and tough eleven-year-old, from her home in Pennsylvania to the foreign landscape of Key West, Florida in the year of 1936. The novel was edited by Shana Corey, Executive Editor, Random House Children’s Books.

PLEASE IGNORE VERA DIETZ by A.S. King, published by Alfred A. Knopf Books for Young Readers, is named a Michael L. Printz Honor book. The novel is an unforgettable story of friendship and betrayal, a gripping page-turner that is simultaneously funny, quirky, thought-provoking, and always surprising. The Michael L. Printz Award honors a book that exemplifies literary excellence in young adult literature. King’s novel was edited by Michelle Frey, Executive Editor, Alfred A. Knopf Books for Young Readers.

ALMOST PERFECT by Brian Katcher, published by Delacorte Press Books for Young Readers, wins the the Stonewall Children’s & Young Adult Literature Award. The novel is an in-depth and unflinching look at the shame, fear, and hopelessness that often accompanies transgenderism among teens. The Stonewall Children’s and Young Adult Literature Award is the first and most enduring award for Gay, Lesbian, Bi-sexual and Transgender books. The novel was edited by Claudia Gabel, Editor, Delacorte Press Books for Young Readers, and Stephanie Elliott, Senior Editor, Delacorte Press Books for Young Readers.

A TIME OF MIRACLES by Anne-Laure Bondoux; translated from the French by Y. Maudet wins the Mildred L. Batchelder Award. Set against the backdrop of civil unrest in the Republic of Georgia, this mesmerizing tale is a poignant journey of two refugees, a young boy and the woman who cares for him. A Time of Miracles has received an impressive four starred reviews. The Mildred L. Batchelder Award, established in Mildred L. Batchelder’s honor in 1966, is a citation awarded to an American publisher for a children’s book considered to be the most outstanding of those books originally published in a foreign language in a foreign country, and subsequently translated into English and published in the United States. A Time of Miracles was edited by Francoise Bui, Executive Director, Delacorte Press Books for Young Readers.

FIESTA BABIES, by Carmen Tafolla; illustrated by Amy Córdova, published by Tricycle Press, is named a Pura Belpré Honor for illustration. From piñatas to flower coronas, little ones are introduced to the many colorful aspects of an important and lively Latino cultural tradition. These Fiesta Babies dance, march on parade, and sing along to mariachi songs in their spirited celebration of fiestas. This is Amy Córdova’s second Pura Belpré Honor Book. The Pura Belpré Award, established in 1996, is presented to a Latino/Latina writer and illustrator whose work best portrays, affirms, and celebrates the Latino cultural experience in an outstanding work of literature for children and youth. Fiesta Babies was edited by Joanne Taylor, Editor, Tricycle Books.
